She had asked for niece biscuits but all I could see were Nice biscuits. I dithered and I dithered until in the end I decided that I liked the idea of Nice biscuits and chose them. I did feel a twit, but it gave Miss Ghrist a good laugh and I did go to cheer her up. Frances Cleveland also lent her support to both national and local Washington organization that were headed by women such as the WCTU's "Hope and Help" project.
Health and Safety hadn’t been invented in the fifties, but someone had considered the threat of fire in such a large house. The building itself had two wings, each with its own staircase and a long corridor that linked the two halves. The back wing was only two stories and there was an alternative escape route from a bathroom window and over the coal shed roof, but the front wing was three storeys high. The answer came in the form of a rope and sling pulley which was fixed to the wall up in the top bedroom.
Friendless Girls' Home, Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scotland
Its design reflects the Colonial Revival style, which was coming into popularity at the end of the 19th century, and it was the work of local architects Benjamin R. Bushey and Guy Kirkham. When I called the Sangamon County History I was told that the new Abraham Lincoln Library contained boxes of records and photos from The Home for the Friendless. So, possibly, I might be able to get copies of some old photos of the children. As it is now, my family and I have zero information about my Dad until he married my mom. I believe my grandfather may have been placed in the home on July 7, 1874 and was placed in the custody of a Mrs. George Rohrer that same day.
Against the President's wishes, Frances Folsom Cleveland's image appeared on numerous campaign paraphernalia, such as flags, posters, handbills, plates, ribbons, handkerchiefs, napkins, and playing cards. One poster even placed her portrait between that of her husband and his running mate, Allen Thurman. In response, the Republicans placed Caroline Harrison's picture on posters. Although they could not vote, women were very active in campaigns, and in 1888, Democratic women across the country organized themselves into Frances Cleveland Influence Clubs. The President had proposed to Frances Folsom in the spring of 1885 during a visit she and her mother made to Washington.
A NEW HOME FOR FRIENDLESS GIRLS; Quarters Opened in Fourteenth Street by the Rescue Band.
School was quite a distance for youngsters and the route we generally took was through Falsgrave Park, as it was the shortest. It also meant that we could stop for a quick go on the swings on our way, as long as we weren’t late; and even if we were. But as time passed and I discovered friends locally, I would call for them on the way. First to Glynis’s house in Oak Road, then down on to Seamer Road for Helen.

In 2013, the Caladh House Association was taken over by Turning Point Scotland. The orphanage accepted dependents from infancy to 14 years of age. Although most of the children came from the Indianapolis area, the home accepted orphans from all over Indiana. The Society of Friends worked to place orphans with families, often with farm families throughout Central Indiana.

On Saturdays, the younger children were taken out for a walk while the over-10s helped with domestic chores. A Bible class was held on Tuesday evenings, while Wednesday evenings were allocated for recreational pursuits such as playing games or singing. All the girls over eight years of age were deemed to be candidates for membership of the Girls' Friendly Society and a preparatory class was held every Thursday evening. Over the years, the building provided shelter for women in a variety of situations.

The Society has produced detailed catalogues of its records relating to disabled children, and of records relating to the Children's Union . Growing demand for places at the Home led to the acquisition of some neighbouring houses which increased its capacity to 30 places. Eventually, however, it was decided to build a completely new Home. A site was found on Hessle High Road and July, 1914, construction work began on what became the Pickering Home for Girls which opened in September, 1915. The ground floor of the Home included a dining-room, Matron's sitting-room, and a wardrobe-room where the girls' Sunday best clothes were kept.
Sixteen years after the death of her first husband, Emma Folsom married Henry Edward Perrine on 20 May, 1889. Although Frances Folsom Cleveland was the wife of President Grover Cleveland and served as his First Lady for part of his first term and during all of his second term, he entered the presidency as a bachelor. His unmarried sister Rose Elizabeth Cleveland served as the first First Lady of the Cleveland Administration, until his June 1886 marriage to Frances Folsom. The biography of Rose Elizabeth Cleveland follows at the conclusion of the Frances Cleveland biography. In the mid-1960s, the premises become a children's home known as Caladh House, then later provided care for adults with special needs. In 2009, the charity, now known as the Caladh House Association, relocated to Bank Street, Greenock.
The house had to be cleaned, there was a rota and we all had our jobs. The stairs were swept and the big old Potterton boiler in the kitchen black-leaded. But the job that became my favourite, was polishing the Playroom floor. The books in this collection are in the public domain and are free to use and reuse.
This facility was still in use when the first photo was taken in the late 1930s, although overcrowding led the organization to move elsewhere in 1940. By this point, the South End had become largely Italian, and the building became the lodge for the Sons of Italy, an Italian-American fraternal organization. Although they no longer use the building, it is still standing, with few exterior changes, and it is an excellent example of institutional Colonial Revival architecture in the city. As for the Home for Friendless Women, the organization is now known as the Children’s Study Home, and continues to serve Springfield more than 150 years after Rachel Merriam helped to establish it.

The old Potterton boiler was lit to provide gallons of hot water and we lined up, youngest to eldest for a good scrub. I remember Ena buying some rather posh bath oil and when nobody was looking, I poured some in to the water. It was lovely and the water was all smelly and swishy, and of course it wasn’t long before I was found out. But I knew I had been naughty and instead of confessing what I had done I played the innocent.
